Storyline : Marguerite is a courtesan in Paris. She falls in love with a young man by name Armand Duval. Armand's father intervenes and requests her to leave Armand so that he can pursue his career successfully. She leaves Armand. Later it so happens that she is stricken with Tuberculosis and dying. At that time, she discovers that Armand has not forgotten her at all. Tuberculosis was a terminal illness those days.

Kowalski at first dislikes his Vietnam neighbors but later starts to like them and becomes very close to Thao, a young boy and Sue, his elder sister. Things are going smooth at first but soon Thao gets into trouble with the local Vietnam boys and the rest of the story is about how Kowalski manages to save Thao and his sister from those boys.

Red finally succumbs and his nephew vows to make the story of his uncle known to the world, together with the girl he has befriended during the journey.
